Do you have any agreements here?

A double for us is penalties. A pass is forcing and would be our choice on this hand.

It is also reasonable to agree that the first double is take-out, in which case you double. The key thing is to have firm agreements with partner.

A useful agreement that we have is that once we have doubled 1N, we will not sit 2m undoubled. This is mainly for teams where -180 isn't a disaster, but we do it in pairs so there is a forcing pass available over 2. We play penalty doubles next but you can agree to play t/o. So we pass, forcing.

If Pass is forcing what is your "I have already shown my hand" bid ?
Does this agreement about 2m mean you are more discerning about what you double with ?

If 2C is a choice and not forced then X would be t/o, else penalty.

Agree with this.
In both cases I would want to know what 2 promises and denies.

What was the xx Jilly? If rescue, then 1 x 2C for takeout.

XX SOS
2 forced but not alerted (I know this from seeing the hand)

Bear in mind partner didn't pull the double, pass covers "I already showed my hand and it's reasonably balanced". We double a weak NT with most 15s.

You need an agreement about the difference between 1N=X-XX-P-2-P(F)-P-2 and 1N-X-XX-2

A takeout double looks fine. I don't hate 2 either but I think it is worse on balance. The fact that partner didn't run to 2 last round (they always run to my short suit with a 0-count) is a good sign.

Why would North ever run over a rescue XX ? The opps are already running.

Because he wants to bid 2 of a suit not 3 of that suit ?

I would remove the double with J109xxx and out and a void spade so I don't have to remove after the auction goes 1N-X-XX-P-2-P-2-P-P-X-P-P or similar. If you're not going to remove, partner will have 4 spades, 4 diamonds, and 2X and 3+ both make, if you do remove, partner will have a stiff diamond and 5 spades and you'll go for 2-500 vs nothing at the 3 level where 2 would be either -1 or making undoubled.

(1NT) X (XX) P (2D or higher) X is penalty, pass is forcing

(1NT) X (XX) P (2C*) X

If X is penalty of 2C when natural and take out if 2C is forced
Pass is forcing

We have 2 ways to take out over the opps running to 2C, shouldn't double always be penalty? (2C* forced) X. I have clubs?

Note to self we must ask about 2C every time, alerted or not.
