IMP pairs. NS playing Precision (but the opening1 promised 4), which maybe explains S's bid, though it hadn't occurred to either of us she could be that weak (say if this makes a difference).

Where do we want to be, and where should we actually end up?

Supplementary question - if East had doubled, what would you do as west?

E's double should show spades, 1 is a very standard psyche here.

I think E should bid 2 which I think shows this hand, you can pass with diamonds with partner known to be short.

W should start 1 imo, but starting DBL actually could work for them better on this particular hand.
E hand is borderline between invite and gf after the double but even if East forced, not sure if they would find the right game.
I would not make a huge deal out of any bid in this auction.
