BBF lost by 80-20. I guess the BBF players today are not also BBF posters, since otherwise they would have posted here.

I am, I just got out of a long postmortem with my partner :-)
Quite some time was spent on discussing the defense to board 16: I should probably lead a club, but after the diamond lead, was I correct to rise with the heart jack at trick two? Are there layouts (with partner holding the stiff heart 9) where not rising would cost a trick?
A few others:
How good is 4S on board 7? (regardless I'm probably worth a direct 2S)
Did I take all my chances on board 17?

16. I watched this and have a lot of sympathy for popping. You don't need partner to have stiff 9. If declarer has AK9xxx you lose a heart trick by ducking. I do not have any sympathy when you hopped sK from Kxxx when your pard had AJ.
7. I think this is a WTP 2S call but your partner might have tried 3D anyway.
17. Tough hand but your line seems ok. On balance I'd drop the DJ to retain a tenace against RHO. Note that your teammates failed to play bridge on this one.

Indeed, I failed to play second hand low quite a few times.
How can unblocking the DJ ever help?

Because there are layouts where RHO has the heart tops and you can end play her. You don't have a dummy entry after unblocking the club so it's not like you are untangling the diamonds anyway. I suppose there's a stepping stone possibly. All this is largely academic but it's a good priciple to keep in mind.

On 16 your ♥J didn't actually cost - e.g. if your partner returns a high diamond, you'll stay ahead in the trump shortening game.
If your first double was exactly 4 spades, then partner should see that cashing a club can't be necessary - and it might help declarer elope with his small trumps.
In those layouts, you can always overtake ♦J in the endgame and then exit with a low diamond?

The easiest way to count losers is to line up the people who talk about loser count, and count them. -Kieran Dyke
