don't like it, but the 8131 with KQx in the 3 card suit makes it my choice.....would pass with 8221. I would never bid anything other than pass (intending to bid later) or 4

Thanks for the answers.
I opened 4; that was DBLed by RHO (with around 25 HCP) and passed around:
(4S)-P-(P)-DBL
AP
Partner had something like: v=JTxxx=xxx=JTxxx
Result: 4Sx-4 (-800)

At the other table the bidding was:
(3S)-P-(P)-3NT
AP

Result: 3NT+2 (+460)

I am not surprised.
Opening 4 on a jack high suit is asking for a DBL or if partner is strong getting to a noplay slam or 5.

even when you catch a void in front they can't always pass 4X

I think this is close btn 3s and 4s with KQx tipping the scales in favor
of 4s. Would not get upset if p chose 3s since it has quite a bit of preemptive
power not available to the other suits. Surely if spades are not 221 around the
table p will have the dia J right???? Choosing 4s has a much larger payoff when
it makes and that nice side void can be a huge surprise to any opp that x.

Strictly speaking 3s expects to take 6 tricks so it fits the classic preempt
shape for equal nvul. Sometimes the percentages do not lie and going down 1 less can
be worth a lot of imps.

4s = 7 3s = 6 p = 3 not happy with much else.
