Matchpoints, opps' 1 shows 4+ (and again 1M would probably be the call of choice on a balanced (4n)(4n) outside the 12-14 range):

I feel like 1N would be better (though not necessarily right) at teams, but at MPs I think I rate to take more tricks in partial Moyesian than NT contract, so X for me. It also gives P the chance to rightside 1N with such as Qxx or Jxx in Hs. I'll feel a bit sheepish if he bids 2D, but I think it's worth the risk (and given that he'll probably have a 5-card D suit to do it, we might still match the score of NT bidders, or on a good day make when they go off).

If P bids 1 with three of the suit I'll also feel a bit queasy, but if we're lucky the opps might still pull us out of it.

Double = 10, 2 = 8, 1N = 7, Pass = 6. You're a bit weak for 1N -- and you'd prefer partner to be declarer.

easy double. you have short hearts. why the rush to get to NT? if partner has enough for us to make 3NT, he'll do something.

double. Never make minimum 1N overcalls with no trace of a second stopper. In addition, if we belong in notrump, partner should probably belong on play.

I would double with this as oppose to my usual 1 NT overcall but imho 1 NT>2. In fact I hate 2.

I'd rather pass than 2, but I suppose overcalling 2 against ACOL when RHO can be balanced doesn't suck as much as against a normal 5 card major.

Double. Make the hearts AT and you could talk me into overcalling 1NT.

I voted double.. but it is match-points and we are NV. Seizing the 1NT has some advantages at this vulnerability.

Dbl. More flexible than 1NT and anything pard says at the min level should have a play for.

We may well want to play in clubs and bidding clubs is the way way to achieve it. And if we belong in 3NT, partner should play it. Also, a 2 bid makes it slightly more awkward for the opposition. LHO could have five cards in a pointed suit and need to stretch his values to bid it.

I see one advantage of 1NT, namely that partner can bid spades more easily.

Anyway, double is of course right.

Double, for a few reasons.

1. A takeout double promises 3+ cards in every unbid suit and opening values. That's exactly what you have. Sure, you'd like to have 4 , but it's not absolutely required. If one of your small was a small , you'd have no problem calling a double.

2. You'd like to have a better suit for a 2 level overcall. A decent hand with a stack behind you could add up to a set for a number.

3. Even with 15 HCP, the scattered Ks and Js without many intermediates, just don't seem like a 1 NT overcall

DBL is right we agree. 1 NT has flaws and worse than DBL we also agree. But still 1 million miles ahead of 2 overcall. 2 is plain bad for so many reasons I really don't wanna type all of that which I did in the past. I could have sympathy if the suit was decent. Right-siding the contracts are overstated as usual compared to how hard it is for advancer also (not only opps) to make decisions accurately after 2 overcall.

Why on earth would I want to play in clubs anyway? Yes I can see if pd has 4 card fit I may, but I am pretty much reducing the ability of playing in spade or diamond partscore when pd has 5-6 of them. And in which combination are we right siding it for NT? I can think of when pd has Qx or. But if he has Qxx we are still in good shape. How about when he has JTx and heart honours are split? If anything NT is probably our best spot and not even sure if he will bid NT with JTx.

Please don't overcall 2 with this when we are playing. Posted Image (joke Helene Posted Image)

x = 10 1n = 5 2c = 3 p = 2 pass will work on hands where we don't
make anything even then not all of the time:)

Aside from most of the commentary above, x has another advantage. We have
great rebids for all bids p makes.

My partner will expect 4 spades for a double (or a hand stronger than this), and I don't think I have a great hand for him when he jumps in spades with a 4 card suit. (What "great rebid"?) On the other hand, if he should bid spades freely over 2 then I am delighted, and if he passes I am happy to play in 2.

Perhaps it depends on style. While I may have only 3 of a minor for a X, there is a stronger implication of 4 for a major. My 2 level overcalls do not need to be solid.
