How greedy are you feeling?

If you bid 1N, LHO Xes, P passes, RHO bids 2.

1NT and 3C for me. Don't think it's greedy unless i fear pd will be tempted to save me in 3D.

IMO
  • After (1) ??: 1N = 10, 2 = 9, 3 = 6.
  • After (1) 1N (Double) Pass; (2) ??: Pass = 10, 3 = 8, 2N = 6

a- 2
b- Easy Pass

If i overcalled 1 NT and LHO doubled, showing 9+ hcp, for some 10+, means pd is broke and we are VERY likely to end up playing this crappy hand from our own hand unless we get lucky and find 3-4 clubs with pd. But this will be washed by the hands that pd corrects to 3 or leaves us with shortness in clubs.

Basically, you will bail -300 EVEN IF you score all your 6 clubs, you will have to find a way to make 2 tricks, by playing from hand when you have KJx Jxx K left. good luck with that.Posted Image But obviously, 3 bidders see something that I can not see.

Yeah, but are you *expecting* that to happen? Most of the time when you have a fifteen count, LHO doesn't have an X.

Against that you have the obvious upside of a better score for making the 8 or more tricks, and occasionally 1N might stop them finding a fit that they'd scrabble into over 2, making you a few MPs even if it goes down.

To me the answers are obvious:
a. 2
b. Pass

That said, overcalling 1NT the first time strikes me as a semi-reasonable way to 'shoot' if I really needed a board. It might actually work out. On the other hand a follow up of 3 over opponent's 2 just seems desperate.

You might also 'shoot' with an initial super-heavy 3 preemptive overcall. Your chances of missing game are small, and the opponents may misjudge. It is probably safer than overcalling 1NT, but it is less disruptive.
