As Al Roth might say, "I expect there to be more bidding."

I totally object to the opening bid of 1C. 1H is far better with this limited 6-5. However perhaps I was called to the phone before the auction and the drink waiter opened my hand for me; I will now bid 4H. I have a 4 loser hand and a 5th H. This contract should have a decent play. (I must admit that I would prefer the knave of C to make this but, but oh well....

i'd bid 4H (and would have opened 1H), but i don't know what i'd do after a double and 4S on my right

Over 4s my 2h limited rebid will work out great!

Now I can rebid 5clubs, showing Long clubs, Long hearts, short spades but limited HCP. A second choice would be 4nt, pick a game.

If Partner rebids 4H I would assume a much stronger HCP hand. Better than a 3H rebid hand or 2h rebid hand.

This is the sort of bidding that destroys partnerships. You find a simple nf 2H bid and then when the opponents bid to 4S you decide to bid 5C on a Q high suit, when you know the Spades are not breaking.

This hand with 5H has the playing strength of your quoted 1444 18 count. Note how all this nonsense could have been avoided by opening 1H rather than the ridiculous 1C.

Further to answer your question, "Yes", I do. You are bidding like a one man band in your auction and are showing scant respect for your partner. As I said this is a good way to end a partnership.

i think if it goes 1c (1s) x (p) 4h (x) p (4s) i'd bid 5h now... while it's true that the hand doesn't look like a "normal" jump to 4h, it's also true that the playing strength more than makes up for it... however, therein lies the problem (to me)... the hand is far more powerful offensively than defensively, so that raises a question...

i agree with mike that the 4h bid might mislead partner when it comes to defensive potential (hcp)... so the question is, if my lho bids 5s and partner passes, it that forcing? i have no defense to speak of, maybe 1 trick... yet i don't relish bidding 6h pretty much all by myself, especially since i'm not convinced 5h over 4s is correct

Mike,
The other point is that with a strong 1444 would you commit the hand to 4H? Does your partner guarantee a 4 card H suit for his Sputnik X? If so what would he do with the following:
xx
xxx
KQxx
KQxx

The jump to 4H is better served as a shapely hand. There are better ways of bidding the strong 1444 hands.

Agree with opening 1h and avoiding all this nonsense.
No, I am not bidding over 5s.
1444 I would open 1D so.....

Yes - pard guarantees 4 hearts. I will follow with 5 hearts over 4 spades.

I also open this hand 1H. Solves problems later.

I'm not creating a forcing situation either. There are some weaker 5-6's and 5-7's that I would also jump to 4 on.

I think stronger hands can be better handled with a splinter or Q.

I agree with everything that Ron has said in this thread (except for his comment about Ur, I have no clue). I do guarantee 4 hearts when doubling over 1C-1S. With xx xxx KQxx KQxx I bid 2C, what's the problem?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Ur was indeed an ancient babylonian city. One of the cities witnessing the birth of Writing, which marked the beginning of History.

As for the bidding.. well, I think I shoot at 4H, though with much less conviction than about Ur :D
