This is a board my partner sent me from SF, wanting to know what I would do holding this hand.

We don't have any agreements here, obviously I'm thinking slam.
5 sounds like an alternate place to play so I don't want to make that bid with Jxx support for partner.
I can just bid a boring 6 but what does 6 or 6 say? If 6 shows simply first round control in diamonds, why
would I be forcing to slam? So, could it show 1st round diamond and spade control?
Or I think perhaps better still, what if 6 says partner I want to play 6 and have the other 2 suits covered, if
you have 1st round club control you may want to consider 7?

As it is, I bid 6 and expect we'll play in 6.

I bid a pedestrian 6 and am prepared to tell West "nice bid" if we missed 7.

Ok that's the easy solution, but what about my question?

I don't know the answer to any of the four questions that you asked. All of your proposed meanings for the other bids seem reasonable, but it's certainly something to be discussed on a partnership basis and not something I would presume that partner can work out at the table without prior discussion. (That answer might be different in the Expert Forum.)

The simplest solution is to begin to begin with the concept that
the heart suit is good enough that a "correction" to 5s would be
meaningless. This leaves the 5s bid available as a cue bid for hearts
and any grandslamming your side is going to do is off to a much
better start.

If all you have is KQJT98765 void xx xxx pass do not try and correct to 5s.
If you have AKQJxxxx void xx xxx bid 6s if it doesnt make preempts work.

I agree and if pard bids 6 over 5 I would bid the grand.

5 shows a good hand with, of all things, SPADES.

My wife had this exact auction in the ladies trials 15 years ago. She had 8 solid spades. Her partner alerted it as a "fit non jump" and bid 6 hearts slowly on AJxxxxx hearts. Five Spades was making on the nose.

On this hand, just bid 6 without tipping a potential winning lead.

Count me in for 6, and I've had detailed slam agreements with a number of partners and have never discussed this specifically, so I'd assume (with them) that bids other than 6 are natural.

PD has bid 5 on his own and here I sit with 2 bullets and three quick tricks!! I am delighted to bid 6 which of course, at this level has to guarantee first round control in and is also highly invitational to a grand slam.

Of course there's the risk that my Q-bid alerts LHO to not lead a and he now sets PD in 6 with a different lead but I'll risk that.

I think 5, 6 and 6 are natural; 6 is a grand try with 1st round diamond control; and 5NT is pick a slam or a grand try without a diamond control. In answer to 5NT, Overcaller bids 6 normally (then 6 is the grand try); or 6 if preferring a major with 1st round diamond control; or 6M naturally without 1st round diamond control. I don't think we have space here to worry about the other suits.

I can see how 5NT might be a good place to play at matchpoints, but :)

Yes I would guess that all bids are natural, 6D being a grand slam try for hearts with a D control and 5NT without a D control? Or should 5NT be pick a slam (between what?)?
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Looks like we cross-posted. I think we can manage to combine both into the same bid - see the previous post! Advancer should have 2 places to play for the "pick a slam" meaning, usually a suit of their own plus heart tolerance.

Yes we did crosspost. I assume you mean that pick a slam=6-2 or so in the majors?
