Patton, white against red.

1H - (2S) - 3D - (p)
??

What's your call?

If partner bids 4H next, what would you do?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

lol, nice title. I would bid 4C!

I guess part 2 was supposed to be the real problem. I would pass, partner sounds like he has some kind of misfit. Something like KJxx Jx AQJxxx x is entirely possible. Maybe that's a pessimistic view of life, but I have to work on the assumption that partner has only 2 hearts, and that is a bad start.

At the table opener rebid 3H, which was raised to 4H. Perhaps the question about whether to move on is more interesting now?

4 then Pass for me as well. If I had bid 3, I think over 4 we owe partner a 4 call.

Yes, now we know that p prefers 4 to 3NT when given the choice, and that is great news. I think I make a move now. If I had bid 4 I would certainly pass 4.

4 1st.Partner could have many hands for 4 and we have to respect this.

I'm guessing there was a slow 4 bid??

I pass 4H. Partner has wasted values in spades. Opponents would have bid 4S with their 9 or 10 spades with the AKQJ in that suit.

Partner (me) has xx Kx AKJ10xx Kxx. Hearts and clubs split so 7C and 7H make. We ended up in 6H after .. 3H - 4H - 4S - 4NT - 6C - 6D - 6H. Good result, but it didn't seem like a good auction to me.

By the way, the opponents have 11 solid spades but only 6 tricks.

I'd also bid 3, if partner raises it means he has xxx or Kx imo. We still have our void, good side suit and a little support for partner's suit, so I guess it's ok to try for slam.

Over the 3H bid you are perhaps worth 3S? But good job opps not bidding with 11 spades, made it tough!

This one looks like a 3H bid to show 6 hearts. We usually play 4C as a cuebid for D.

Perhaps, but I was afraid it would clobber the auction. If I bid 3S and partner bids 3NT, I can bid 4H and I've shown a good hand. But what if partner bids 4C or 4D?

That is always a problem in this type of auction. Of course, you still need a strong raise in hearts! A fix that I've been playing lately is that 4C is always coming in hearts, and bidding 3S is either stopper ask or a 4C bid. This has some problems also, but I think a strong raise of hearts is far more important to clarify immediately than a natural 4C bid.

On this hand, if partner bid 4C over 3S, I would feel fine that we're off the AK of spades. If partner bid 4D it is more of a guess.
