The Japanese team had 40,000 people show up for a practice in Japan. I would say they care. South Korea (with a huge rivalry against Japan) also cares.

If you watched the finals in 2006, it would be obvious that Cuba cares too (huge numbers of fans gathered to watch the finals... on TV). And listening to the players, it seems quite likely that folks in the Caribbean such as Dominican, Venezuela, Puerto Rico, and so forth also care.

In fact the people in these countries care a lot more than Americans do -- most Americans who watch baseball are much more interested in the major league season than any international events.

Now, as to whether many people in Italy, Netherlands, South Africa, or Australia care (or even realize they have teams competing)... that may be a different story.

I'd be surprised if it didn't make the news in the Netherlands that their team beat the DR.

What two countries play against each other in this? How did they qualify? From the responses here I guess it's USA vs Japan?

No, there are many many teams involved in this.

Venezuela plays Canada or Italy to get to the next stage but they were beaten horribly yesterday by the US.

Canada supposedly managed to fill the stadium with their fans. It was in Toronto, but still...

Does anyone from the US actually care? I think that this event is a bigger deal outside the US.

Sure, we care. We beat the hosts Mexico into submission last night, 17-7.

I'm actually really into the WBC. It's definitely not as great as the Olympics or the World Cup but I always get into international competition.

Adam and I enjoy watching the WBC. Adam's even going to the final game, and has really good seats.

I am from the USA and I agree very few from here seems to care. I like international competition, so I find it interesting.

I agree not as good as World Cup soccer. I joke I am the only native born American who actually likes watching soccer, especially at the international level.

Well, there are at least two of us! (Never got into cricket or rugby, though.)

Rugby, no. But I do remember when Australian Rules football was on. I kind of liked that.

You are right about that, I heard it on the radio this morning.
