I would never double. I would bid 2D at white/white or white/red (yes yes I'm a sick person I know).
The classic approach is that double shows a good hand with spade length. The modern approach is that double shows a lightish takeout. Either way I'm not going to risk partner sitting for my double with his balanced 12 count or letting LHO in with a 2C bid. If LHO wants to bid clubs he can bid them at the 3 level
I also don't want to let LHO XX to show a max when over 2D he would have no way to show that (unless he has a max with diamond length...gulp).

If I recall correctly, there's a "3rd way". Mike Lawrence claims it's take-out AND penalty. Pard looks at his spade length. If he's full of spades, it's take-out for 2 suits. Otherwise penalty, and asks for a spade lead.

although I hate almost all 2 way doubles, I think this one could work
