At IMPs, red vs white, partner deals and opens 1NT (15-17). My RHO passes and I transfer to diamonds by bidding 3C. My LHO bids 3H, which is passed around to me.

I hold:

How should I proceed? Thanks.

I could bid 4 as a cue for , but next up may be 4 so instead I'll bid 4 immediately showing even keycards

4H can’t be ‘wrong’. I don’t think the hand is good enough to bid 5H since no answer to exclusion can tell you how many tricks you can take. Plus, the ace of hearts isn’t necessarily useless…think of Axx Axx in the majors…good-bye spade loser.

If partner helps out by bidding 4S, I’ll bid 5C and partner knows enough that he should go right.

Do you think 4D is forcing? Do you think your partner thinks 4D is forcing? Would you sell out to 3H if your diamond King were a small diamond? If not, what would you bid? Would you want 4D to be forcing in that case?

Great questions,

Yes I would take 4d as gf, I would take it as a slam try. All the more reason since I am allowing partner to bid 4H, ace asking for D, should they so choose.

With all of the above said, I understand 4H rather than 4d if you prefer.
Yes I am giving up the ability to stop in 4D, at imps, at unfavorable vul.
