I don't think there is much to blame here, it was a reasonable choice to cue for spades given the competition. After 4S I would prefer to control bid 5C rather than RKCB, that way you learn immediately about K diamonds.

Indeed although you want to be in 7 or 7, which shouldn't be beyond the wit of man to find, but also shouldn't make with the bad breaks.

For some reason I am repeatedly getting Gateway timeout errors when I try to post, which is why I appear to be double posting.

The one on which you get the gateway error eventually arrives, so don't send it again

When I get the error I reload the page which I think means it sends the post again. If I get the error again I guess all I need to do is bring the forum up in the browser e.g. in another tab but not by reloading the page.

7 makes if East plays it but I don't think it is realistic to construct an auction where that happens. If West plays it South could make a Lightner double which should tell North to lead a spade.

Coning to this late after the hand was posted. Given your void, and shortness in the suit, there is only a small chance imo that this hand will end in a 3 contract. Yes, I can construct hands where a 3 bid will be passed out. I am in the school of thought that a 3 bid here is forcing - any bid (except one that is conventional) is forcing by a partner who has not yet bid as long as that bid is not at the game level. And, I agree, other players prefer NF here.

Why suppress such a long and reasonably good suit? The 4 jump fit is an option also.

It looks like both sides have a double fit but we have the top suit, spades . It is important that you show partner what sort of hand you have here, as even at red the opps. may have a profitable sacrifice. To not bid the suit is crazy.

Late to the party but one thing I learned a long time ago is that there is rarely a point to trying to bid scientifically on freak hands. Moreover, I don’t need partner to have enough diamonds to raise me in order for diamonds to be the best rump suit. Add to that that bouncing, rather than attempting to describe my hand imposes significant pressure on the opps. Finally, an oldie but Goldie..’what do you call an eight card suit?’ Trumps

I wish I’d posted before the entire hand was shown, and some may think I’m influenced by the hand, but I would have bid 6D directly

I expect a heart lead, after which AJxxx xxx x xxxx gives me a (bad) play for slam. I have no idea how I’d ever find out that we have a good play, but I’m sure that most of the time 6D is somewhere between ‘has some play’ and cold.
