I never really thought of 5's. question is at this level are you always indicating a fit for partner? If partner has the A you still need to control the suit. Will partner pass 5's?

For me i figure its between 5's and pass.

With a pick-up pd, I am not sure he would understand what 5 means, especially when suit was heading my Q(?) only. I prefer 5S or even 6S.

I think partner has a major 2 suiter, 6-4 or alike, K is worth nothing and we might even lose 2 quick tricks, so pass.

thats what the 5 would ask...partner to bid 6's if he has control of the suit. Actually there is no partnership understanding on anything this is a hand that came up in an individual tourney.

Partner may be stretching.

Looking at my spade holding, he
surely does.

If you are playing with an unknown partner,
pass is even more clearcut than otherwise.
