They were doing remarkably well without Flannery until that dumb 3 bid.

[Edit: typo corrected]

Don't you mean "dumb 3" bid??
IMO the auction should go 1h-1nt-2c-2s-2nt-all pass.
And west really has no reason to bid after 3c, for that matter.

This... isn't a flannery commercial. It's a commercial for learning how to bid in the system you're playing. I challenge anyone to tell me what 3C could possibly indicate about the hand.

Alternatively, it's an advert for KI, which gets you playing in 2NT without risking being raised in clubs. Alternatively, it's an advert for literally any sensible system except 2/1, though that's a separate matter.

Since 2/1 played rationally gets you to the exact same 2nt contract as other systems probably get you to, I don't see how this particular hand is an advert against 2/1. It's just an advert for having sensible continuations after the impossible 2S.
If anything, it's an advertisement for semi-forcing NT, though of course that treatment will sometimes lose on different combination of hands.

Tbh I don't really get why East doesn't pass 1N

1NT is forcing. West could have a number of hands that would make 1NT look silly. Basically any very weak hand with a 6-card suit.

I was indeed thinking of systems that let you stay and relax in 1NT, yeah.

I know what a forcing 1NT is. :) I think rebidding 2 on a 2 card suit will lead to many more silly contracts that passing 1N.

All that needs to be done is to rebid 2NT rather than that silly 3 and then it is passed out.

The other problem is rebidding with a normal 12 count when game seems quite unlikely.
