IMPs, red vs green, LHO deals and opens 3D, 2 passes follow and you have the now awkward to bid following collection (who said diamond didn’t preempt?):

Ax
QJx
xx
AQX9xx

Uh?

My partner was on the conservative mode that day, if that helps. Slight lead halfway but you have 2 bad boards (incl. a red 6NT-2 with SAK missing, thanks not in’the same hand). I committed a crime on that one, but escaped the sentence (more of that later).

Tough. 3NT may work on some days, pass on others. Any other bid risks misleading partner.

I rank
1, Pass = NAT. Fixed.
2. Double = T/O then over 3 try 3N but partner will think you're stronger.
3. 4 = NAT. Unless you've agreed non-leaping Michaels.
4. 3N = NAT. Risky but a good pay-off when it works.

You guys are as crazy as me. I indeed bid 3NT, putting a stopper in partner’s hand and hoping C’s would yield 6 tricks, planning to run to 4C if Xed. She had a flat hand with SQ, HK, DA and CJ, and with the C finesse working... Opps almost called the TD seeing dummy after the DK lead.

Called the TD because you psyched a diamond stop?? Or did partner hesitate?

I've seen more than a few people punt 3NT in situations like this, though the one time I tried it I went five off or something. Would be interesting to do a simulation, I wouldn't be surprised to find it a winner, particularly red at IMPs.

There's no arguing with success, but even if partner has a diamond stop and clubs are good for six tricks that is still only adds up to eight tricks. Hoping for another trick from partner seems to me to me to be a step too far.
