It is not (generally) useless. In Blackwood the 5NT bid serves two purposes: (1) to enquire into Kings, and (2) to confirm that all key cards are held in case partner has sufficient undisclosed extras to commit to grand.
So even if purpose (1) is redundant, purpose (2) may still have relevance.
