Nothing wrong with the 1N bid in the modern style - this makes no promises in Spades. It enables responder to neg double 1S in relative safety to look for a 4-4 Heart fit on a hand that is otherwise perfect for a 1N response (bal, well stuffed in Spades, limited values), as here:

If your style were to respond 1N on the linked hand and then investigate Hearts if strong enough, then there would be less of a case for opener rebidding 1N on this hand. But that is a minority treatment, and West lacks the strength to enquire after a guard.
But if 1N does not promise a Spade guard, then it does rather behove responder to enquire on the way to 3N if also lacking.

The symptom is not dissimilar to the way that GIB handles a Cappelletti 2C overcall over a 1N opener. With a balanced hand and no interest in Major suit fit, responder will go straight to 3N with a small doubleton, which is likely to be overcaller's suit, trusting to luck that opener will have it guarded. An alternative policy might be to pass over 2C, have overcaller's suit confirmed, and then cue the suit as a guard enquiry.
