So in bridge, "hand" refers to the cards, and we need a different word to refer to the body part that holds the hand?

No, I would expect anybody with a bit of intelligence (sufficient to read the Laws of Bridge) to know the difference from the context where it is used.
(We have similar "problems" in Norwegian, for instance the little word "mot" is spelled and pronounced exactly the same whether it means: (movement) "Towards", (opinion) "Against", (noun) "Courage" or (lawsuit) "Versus".)
