Matchpoints. 2nd qualifying session.

The 2 bid was explained as a strong jump overcall.

Do you double?

[Sorry - bidding changed at about 16:36 on October 22.]

Since the problem changed, this comment is no longer relevant.

Remarkable pass by N with 4441 12 hcp. This is the only interesting thing that i see when i look at this thread.
I would DBL 4 of course but i can predict this can be the losing case in interesting hands forum.

Sorry. I was having trouble reconstructing the auction and I missed the fact that I opened the bidding. :)

I now recall that the bidding was somewhat "unusual." I fixed it in the OP.

I hope this doesn't change the problem too much.

Looks like a 5 bid coming back after the double so I'm passing. IF we beat 5 this is going down 2 or more.

You have substantially changed the bidding, not 100% sure I'd double here, but I'd want to take a look.

Now that I've taken a look, I am letting 4 go - its not the field auction, I think I'm ahead as long as they play 4, I don't need to double to beat the field in a matchpoint event, I think, and I'm not sure I'm beating 5. I am no longer sure what I am going to lead, either. I would want to ask N what 3H would have meant from S, and see if I can discern why the auction went the way it did - which suit is N afraid of for having pulled 3N to 4S.

Actually it did change the problem for me. Previously they had a spade fit and no indication of long diamonds. Here i am not sure if we have enough tricks to defeat 5. I may still DBL if i need some MPs due to the state of session, otherwise I will stop being greedy and sit on 4

I'm passing. My concern isn't so much 5 as the opponents retreating to a makeable 4 NT.

(Above comment made in response to original bidding sequence but applies even more so to revised sequence.)

Here is the full hand:

I doubled, and they sat, so I got +200. The double turned my 9.5 into an 10 on an 11 top.

The opps had a very peculiar auction to a very poor spot. I should have passed out 4 since they can run successfully to 4NT. But that didn't happen, so all ended well.

The double was fine. The fact that they can make 4NT and not 4 is a fluke in my view. But given that it was matchpoints, it stood little to gain and a fair amount to lose. (Edited because original comment incorrectly assumed partner was on lead.)
There is a big difference between a good decision and a good result. Let's keep our posts about good decisions rather than "gotcha" results!
