1: Dbl
2: 2♦
3: Pass
4: 2NT
Our 1♦ opening is ill defined regarding distribution. That is a drawback in competition. However, it is well defined regarding strength. That is an advantage in competition. It means I can make a negative double and pass partner's rebids without fear of missing game. If partner comes to life and starts to jump I can still bid 3NT.

Our 1D could be short and our 2D is a transfer to hearts. Yuck for double. Partner can jump to 3M opposite that and I doubt will like 2M very much.
Btw the knr for the hand is 6.2 hcps

My estimate was 8. I did not understand why a natural 2NT response was even under consideration - I thought it was going to be a both minors kind of thing until I realised they had overcalled clubs.

So? Unless it has to be short, there is no reason not to raise partner. Usually (in the case where 1♦ is natural or balanced, an opponent overcalls 2♣ and we have 4 clubs) partner will have 4+ diamonds.

Unless you don't have a raise available.
(It is a mistery to me why one would want to play a system where it is impossible to make the most important bid in competition: raise partner.)

If you are suggesting by the question in your OP that this is a borderline 2NT, then you should be thrilled to be able to play 2 of a suit if partner is minimum and 3NT if partner is maximum. If you agree that opposite a minimum it is better to play 2♦/♥/♠ than to play 2NT then you could think that Dbl is yuck, but it is a lot less yuck than 2NT.

An intermediate player will think: "2NT promisses 11-13HCP, the hand isn't even worth 10HCP, so we don't have enough to bid 2NT".
An advanced player will think: "easy pass, wtp".
