Assume your jump overcall agreement is unsuitable. All players claim expert status

What do you bid as West (all red)?

Is this hand really that close to a double? You have 16 HCP, but 3 of those aren't really working for you anyways. You're hand can take 7 tricks on a good day, but needs a bit of help from partner. Seems to me like 1, followed up by maybe 2 describes your hand better.

I'm in favour of quite a light "double then bid suit" strength, and I think this hand qualifies.

Though admittedly we won't be making game unless partner has a bid after we overcall 1.

I just overcall. But close enough that if the minor suit quacks were combined into one king, I would double and pull.

My choice is 1. Then bid 2 again.
Queen in and Jack in look like less usefulness if they havenot gotten help from partner.

Does rebid 2H if that is available distinguish
8 with 5xH from opener values with rebiddable hearts?
I think yes.
Let X first show game try opposite useful 7.

1 for me, too. Really, this hand isn't even close to double then bid.

I am somewhat interested why Rainer posted this - I am sure he knew the answers would be heavily in favour of the overcall.

First one is a 1 bid for me but it's extremely close. Change the DQ to the DK and I'm X-then-bidding.

Second one is a clear X-then-bid (5 losers, lots of firepower amongst those 18 HCP).

Edit: If the first one is a 1H-then-2H, what does a 1H-then-3H look like?

Agree (for first hand) that if you're going to only overcall 1, then you need to do more than just 2 on the second round.

"Partner, game with a useful 7": CA +any or HQ+SQ or 4xH +DQ
even though those are way less than 7 but useful.
Start double. No fear to rebid 3H, even 4H. Double 5C.

:P 1. The only point not mentioned in earlier posts is the danger of doubling w/o (at least in North America). Even so, reverse the and suits, and I still would overcall.

Easy overcall, but would still overcall if J was the K.
