Clearly, West thought East was about to be endplayed (swap the 2 for the K). The real culprit is the discarding as well as the horrific defense.

East can tell he's never getting in, so it doesn't matter what cards he keeps.
GIB is unable to tell what information partner needs to know about its hand, which would be revealed by its discarding. And it can't imagine what problems partner might have.
