This is more a sanity check than anything else. I thought it was obvious at the table but the results didn't bear that out.

2. Doubling on this hand is out of the question, and I think pass is too much of a position to take.

Everyone who doubled got *really* lucky this time. Next time partner will bid 3 or 4 . 2 is the only reasonable bid.

Actually, no one did double (maybe one pair but no more than that). The numbers that EW were collecting were for defending UNDOUBLED diamond contracts. So the field seemed to be making a choice between 2H and pass. It still looks like a clear 2H bid to me. The full hand:

The hand is moderately defensive. I would try my luck with dbl. If pard bids clubs... well, good luck him :)

This one really looks like a pass to me. Minimum values and you don't want to hear 3C from partner if you double, so you want to pass. Of course, it isn't a popular choice for many.

My guess is that east did not open the bidding at most tables. Then the auction looks like:

p - 1 - p - 1 <--- this makes it harder for east to get in the auction
p - 2 - p - p
?

Maybe east should still balance 2, but it isn't quite the same problem as at your table. Double is even less appealing, and pass more so, considering the spade situation.

I'm doubling.

I'm not so sure why y'all say 2 is clear. You have 11 highs and neither partner nor RHO took a call .. where are the Diamonds and where are the HCP? (also, you have 2 Aces, if partner has a penalty pass playing 2* VUL seems fine)

Yes, you will pay off when partner bids , but IMHO he will have a penalty pass far more often then a 3 call when you have so few HCP (else someone would have bid).
If no one comes from the future to stop you from doing it then how bad a decision could it really be?

what you need a simul to convince you that the risk/reward for the 2 is right? IMO those not bidding 2 are possibly guilty of <gasp> resulting.

I would be VERY surprised if this were the case. The "Rule of 20" has acquired almost the force of law amongst the LOLs at my local club.

I am pretty sure the hand was played on planet Earth. Otherwise the OP would probably have mentioned it.

Ah, your club is different than the ones I go to. Around here, club games tend to sport more conservative (dare I say fraidy cat) bidding.

While I'm sure I would bid 2at the table I can see the case for a pass and probably should more often.

You have min strength
If pard has the kind of strength you need they have <3 and <4(no negative double)

Since they are marked with the minors 2 can't be a winner (very often) unless they have exactly 3 of them.

I'm not doubling cause I usually can't stand a 3 bid by pard OR either opponent.
