Defence to gambling 3N Can you suggest an effective defence?

How do you defend against 3N gambling openers.

Some suggested we could use our standard defence to 1N, so...

4C = both majors
4D - single suited M
4H = 5H + 4+m
4S = 5S + 4+ m

That seems logical?

What would X be? General take out, or a strong hand, or what?

Maybe if you can take 3N off in your own hand (and they are vulnerable) you are better to pass.

More difficult to score as many tricks in 4mX?

Advice and all ideas very welcome.

Your proposed scheme is fine.

Dbl is some strong hand that can't make any of the other bids, ie it will be balanced, have a long minor, or 5M+4m and too strong for a 4M overcall.

Excellent thank you.

What is 3rd hand bids?

(3N) P (4) where 4 is pass or convert.

What actions can 4th hand take?

Intuitively I suppose

4 = majors

What about other bids and X?

You could play 4 as majors here but it is useful as a natural bid also. Without having discussed it I would assume we play
x=t/o
5=probably not natural but no idea what it means!
4NT=can't be natural either because LHO has 7 tricks against 4NT!
Other=natural

I lead an Ace. Honestly, esp. at the B/I level you have much more productive uses of memory/discussion than a defense to a bid that comes up about once every 5000 hands, if that.

I lead a....STFU....

Someone in the BI asks a question and you shun them back to the diamond series?

I haven't heard of this structure, but it looks like multi-landy. In my partnerships, "Ripstra" (based on a defense to a 1N opening - wayyyy before the "C" and the "D" words).

Double = Penalty oriented - any really good hand, or a 1N opening.
4 / 4 = The 'better' minor and both majors.
4M = natural.

I play your scheme. Although it's not 5M + 4m, it's more like 5-5 or better.

As has been said, the Gambling 3NT is a rare beast and investing significantly in a defence is not a good use of B/I time.

That's why I recommend to my B/I friends that they just use their 1NT defence. Not always perfect but it's something they understand.

Whatever defence you choose you should tend to bid very aggressively with shapely hands over gambling 3NT.

I think your scheme is ok. Dbl is needed for strong hands without much shape.
