I would play club ace and a small club to the queen. If RHO shows out on the second round of clubs I may be able to go back to diamonds.

Probably doesn't matter but the heart nine looks strange to me.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

On the A you get the 9 on your right if that matters.

In that case I don't see any reason not to play the club jack.

In any case - WD. Diamonds were 4-1 and clubs 3-2 with 10-9 on your right.

The declarer at the table played, A, ducked, through, to K, hook losing for -2.

?? LHO can still have QJxxx, what else can we do but duck the heart? Indeed it looks like a mortal lock that LHO has exactly QJ832 based on the way the hearts have gone.

As for the play obviously play on clubs. If we can get 4 club tricks we have 9 tricks. If we set up diamonds and get 4 diamond tricks we only have 8 tricks and need some more stuff to happen (like a club hook).

Hans fork is a nice addition if the clubs go A small small small. We will need luck to make it after that but it's an extra shot nonetheless. If RHO plays the T or 9 then play the jack next and claim unless they were playing a game with us with KT9x :)

Lol...a victory for counting your tricks. Ez game.

I think Han doesn't get full credit though since he didn't duck the heart and went down that way :)

This was a new partner. I hope he would have been up to this f/c.

I held QJ8x QJ832 x K5x. I was ready to duck the J if he would have popped K and worked on clubs.

I think I'll get endplayed later since I didn't unblock the 8 for 8 but I don't see 9.

Seems to me like a poor line to play on : you need a 3-2 split for 2 extra tricks AND the hook. Playing on , whenever they're 3-2 or some 4-1's will give you 3 extra tricks immediately, plus the remote chance of QJ stiff.

declarer was very sleepy here, as Free points out, starting with the suit that gives you 2 extra tricks instead of 3 (or even 4) is a beginner's mistake, the fact that that likelly extra trick happens to be the 9th makes it even worse.
