You have A=Jx=Kxx=AT9xxxx
Partner starts the bidding with a pass:
p-(3S)-??
what call do you prefer?

Pass - I prefer to wait for their possible mistakes.

This is a classic example of a hand on which we'd like to bid: we'd like to bid 4 and have partner play us for this hand. The problem is that 4 shows a better hand and a better suit (altho the 7th card makes up for the missing honour(s) to a modest degree.

Partnership discipline requires a pass.... and, as Justin says, it isn't really a close call...

Too bad if they bid 4 and it makes while 5 is either a good save or making... the best methods in the world get you poor results on occasion and you have to learn to live with it.

I compete really aggressively over preeempts, sometimes too aggressively, but this just isn't good enough for 4, but I consider it reasonably close.

I think it is close between pass and pass. Mikeh had a wonderful explanation why.

I wonder, if anybody still passes after
pass (3 ) pass (4 )
pass pass?

I would if the 4 Spade call comes with some confidence and would not else.
Kind Regards

Roland

I think 4 is reasonably safe, provided pard is knowledgeable enough not to raise with 7-8 hcp. The reason is pard is a passed hand. He won't be bidding game unless he has a good pass and, opposite a good pass, game might make after all.

I would bid 3NT if pard weren't a passed hand (intending to remove myself to 4 if doubled loudly.. lol).

4C.

With kind regards
Marlowe

PS: Ouch, I forgot, that I play 4C
as a two suiter, hence I have to pass.
With kind regards

Pass. If pard weren't a passed hand, this would be a tougher problem.

Would any of you overcall 3 over TWO spades with this?

I would (but I would be prepared to go down in 3N if partner has, say, Kxx and Kx and some points in the red suits).

Since I am reasonably close to calling 4 here, I'd bid 3 over a weak 2 instantly.

Pass - but I think it is close. 4C may work out well. Give partner a modest 9 points like xxx Kxx AQxx xxx and 5C makes.
