Please assume 2 clubs is natural 4+, game forcing and shows a good hand.

What is your thought process and bid?

My thought process is this. We are in a GF situation, do I want to Dbl them? No.
So I don't Double.

Do I have something partner needs to know right now?
No.
So I don't bid a suit.

Leaves 3NT and Pass. Since I'm not sure 3NT should be played OR in my hand, I pass now.

damm, there's some nasty stuff on TV late night
wonder who's Leno musical guest tonight, where's the remote?
maybe I should get partner to play this so I can go to the kitchen
man these opponents are slow, oh, its my bid
double should be pure penalty and look at that on TV
really gotta go to the kitchen soon
3NT is piggie and partner has been playing quite fine
let's pass and let partner decide while I check out what's on Leno

My thought processes - I wouldn't have this problem if I hadn't opened this piece of crap - pass (1 bid too late).

And I disagree with Winstonm, this looks a normal opening bid to me (albeit some would say that this has extra values for me).

I'm sure you are not the only one to disagree. But to my way of thinking, this is a limit raise if partner opens 1H and only a fraction better than that if he opens 1S.

In my view, by passing first I can limit my hand and thus my subsequent bids should be defined within an extremely tight range - and if partner cannot open third seat I have lost nothing, and if the opponents have the cards my silence has told them nothing about the hand.

The advantage to opening is that it puts the opposition on defense - which is good - but 1D does not take much room or cause a lot of problems.

I have looked at this from a totally unbiased perspective and must now judge myself to be 100% right and you 100% wrong (which makes it 50/50 in my book)

Pass is obvious. X in a game force situation is penalty--so forcing pass on a takeout double type hand is correct.

I would have passed this hand, but partner's ♣ bid brings my hand up to full opening strength. If partner bids 3NT it should make, and I can leave his double in. We can even get to 4♠ when partner has four.

This forum is certainly the best place online in English for bridge that I know about.

While it may have been clear to most of us to pass, it may not have been to you or you passed and were criticized by PD.

With the feedback from most of us, you can feel pretty certain that passing is likely best here unless playing some specific non standard agreement.

So I say, to the many lurkers here...post interesting decisions, ask questions etc etc and if you are concerned it is a very basic question, post it in the beg/int forum if you want.

Lets liven this place up and turn it into an even better learning experience in the new year.

ty for your nice post. Yes the vast majority said wtp but this seemed much harder when I made my poor choice.

If I had passed my best guess is we would end up in my making a blind jump to 6c later at MP....some made it but not sure if you can against best defense with a 5-0 trump break but.......
